Naples to Sorrento: Your Ultimate Transportation Guide

After enjoying your time in Naples, here are some best transport  options for you that will help you plan a journey toward Sorrento. Naples and Sorrento are only around 50 km (30 miles) apart, but what is the best way to travel between the two cities? Well, we have compiled a comprehensive guide to help you navigate from Naples to Sorrento.

There are various options including plane, trains, bus, ferry, private vehicle, self driving and Shared Shuttle Van. We have discussed details of each option below.

Naples To Sorrento By Train

If you are arriving by plane and landed at Capodichino International Airport you can reach the train station by a shuttle bus (ALIBUS) or taxi. The ALIBUS connects Naples airport to train station and port and have ticket cost of 5 eur. Shuttle service is available every 20/30 minutes from 6 am to 11:40. 1 suitcase and 2 carry on pieces are free.

Taxis are typically accessible at the airport. If you opt for a taxi, ensure the driver follows the fixed rate. Moreover you cannot book a taxi in advance.  As of now, the pre-fixed fare is 18 eur to get to the train station and 21 eur for the port. The ride can take from 20 minutes to 40 minutes according to traffic.

1: Circumvesuviana Train

This Train is easiest option for most people taking about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The ticket cost is about €4,90 one way. The ticket can be easily bought directly at the station’s ticket office 20 minutes before departure, note that credit cards are not accepted. Trains from Naples to Sorrento run from 6:00 in the morning up to 22:00 with a frequency of 30 minutes.

This  commuter train travels along busy main line, so can get very crowded and you may not find seating. Moreover trains are not air conditioned. The train usually runs on time but there might be delays at times, and is generally the fastest and cheapest way to reach Sorrento (not the most comfortable).

The Naples train station has the same sort of safety issues that any train station in a large city may have, so keep an eye on your valuables and documents.

TIP :  If you are travelling with a number of bags, we do not recommend taking the Circumvesuviana:

  1. There is no escalators to reach the platform.
  2. There is no space to store luggage on the train.
  3. The train can get overcrowded, so you may have to travel standing up with your bags next to you.

2: Compania Express

The Campania Express is a special train for tourists that travels from Naples to Sorrento along the same route as the regular Circumvesuviana trains. However, it stops only at few tourist sites like Pompeii and Herculaneum making the journey about 30 minutes shorter than the usual commuter trains. These trains provide guaranteed seating, air conditioning to keep you comfortable, and enough space to store your luggage.

When looking at the schedule, note that the trains marked EXP are Express. The Compania express make 4 departures (total) from 09:00am to 18:00pm between March and October. It typically costs around €15 per person for a one-way ticket on this train. Tickets can be purchased online through the official EAV Campania website.

Private Transfer or Taxi From Naples to Sorrento

Consider a private transfer or taxi for a hassle-free journey from Naples to Sorrento. The trip takes about 1 hour depending on traffic. Professional drivers ensures safety and comfort throughout your journey. Moreover they have flexible schedule and punctual service. Cost for a one way transfer is around 175-210 Euro.

Naples To Sorrento By Ferry: Scenic Route

There’s nothing quite like seeing this magnificent coastline from the water. If you have a little time and want to arrive in Sorrento by sea then take the ferry from the port in Naples.               

Departing from the port in Naples, the hydrofoil offers a 45-minute ride with Alilaura or a 35-minute trip with NLG.        

Be prepared for a cozy indoor seating experience, especially during choppy seas. The ferry operates frequently in the summer, with Alilaura having five daily sailings and NLG offering seven weekly.

On Ailiauro, you can take 1 piece of luggage weighing up to 9 kg, and on NLG, it’s 1 piece of luggage weighing up to 5 kg. Both ferries go out from or arrive at one of 3 passenger terminals on Naples’ seaport: Baverello, Mergellina Pier, and Calata Porta di Massa Pier.

Keep in mind that schedules are reduced from November to March. Prices range from €14 to €23 one way per person, depending on luggage. Purchase tickets at the office or online, especially during peak summer months.  

Public transport buses and trains run to ports in both cities, as do taxis, so you won’t have a problem getting there.

Bus Transfer From Naples To Sorrento

There are many bus companies offering shuttle routes between Naples and Sorrento. Shuttle service is the easiest and cheaper way to reach from Naples to Sorrento taking about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fare is 6-10 Euro.

Curreri Viaggi:

Departs from Naples airport outside Naples Capodichino airport terminal. It’s an inexpensive option that bypasses central Naples. The service is affordable, air-conditioned and have direct route. Ticket cost is  10 Euro.

SITA the second option for bus transfer between Naples and Sorrento, provides convenient departure. The fare of direct route is 4,60 Euro. Approximately 8 buses departure daily from Porta Nolana or Napoli Garibaldi stations. Consider SITA as an alternative option for your journey.
